Guide launched to prevent hiring fraud to combat epidemic levels

A guide to preventing hiring fraud has been launched today [13 March] as the UK encounters “epidemic levels” of increasingly more organised and sophisticated fraud committed during the hiring process.

Created and published by the Better Hiring Institute (BHI) and collaborators Reed Screening, UK fraud prevention service Cifas and S T Smith, the guide provides information about nine different types of fraud occurring in the UK.

They are: reference fraud, qualification fraud, fake application documents, CV-based fraud, employment scams, manipulation of AI, dual employment, immigration fraud, fraud as a result of recruitment agency usage including worker impersonation and the use of non-compliant agencies.

The BHI and its collaborators have defined hiring fraud as any fraud committed during the hiring process; this may be committed by an individual against an organisation, or committed by an entity against a jobseeker.

“The consequences of fraud have never been higher, and we are delighted to have worked closely with the Prime Minister’s anti-fraud champion, Simon Fell MP [PM’s anti-fraud champion], and other members of parliament to lead the conversation on how we can tackle hiring fraud,” a BHI statement said.

Fell added: “The work of the BHI to make UK hiring faster, fairer, and safer is critical to how we drive future competitiveness and prosperity. This guide represents a UK first, a critical part of how we make UK hiring safer for all, especially during this period of great technological change.”
