Firms jump on board National Apprenticeship Week

To mark the start of National Apprenticeship Week (4-8 March), a number of UK employers have already announced they are bolstering apprenticeship numbers.

Apollo Motor Group, BT, Govia Thameslink Railway and UK Power Networks are among the employers hitting the apprenticeship recruitment trail this National Apprenticeship Week.

  • Telco giant BT has created more than 1,600 new apprenticeship and graduate jobs in an array of areas including engineering, customer service, TV production, and cyber-security to support the UK’s fast-growing digital sectors. The new recruits will also support the company’s plans to extend 4G coverage and build the latest 5G networks around the UK.
  • Govia Thameslink Railway, which runs Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express, has launched a recruitment campaign to attract more women to apply for trainee driver roles, working towards 40% female trainee train drivers by 2021. It has also created 140 apprenticeships across a range of roles, from engineering and driving, to digital marketing and customer service. Finally, the company is helping more than 40 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into full-time employment through the ‘Get Into Railways’ scheme in partnership with charity The Prince’s Trust.
  • Independent accident repair organisation Apollo Motor Group has pledged to take on another 25 apprentices in partnership with national training provider Remit Group. The apprenticeship programmes are in body repair, vehicle refinishing, mechanical electrical and trim (MET) and parts at a variety of its sites, including the Apollo head office in Portsmouth, Sittingbourne, Westbury, Swindon, Cheltenham, Salisbury, Chichester, Horsham, Dover, Bexhill and Basingstoke.
  • UK Power Networks is seeking 36 new apprentices to learn how to safely operate the electricity networks for homes, businesses, schools and hospitals across London, the South-East and East of England.
