Aerospace, defence, security and space trade body ADS Group is to bring up to 10,000 young people to the Farnborough International Airshow this Friday (13 July).

The show is held every two years and run by ADS Group. This is the third time Futures Day has been held and having doubled in size for its second outing in 2010, it is due to more than double in size for 2012.
ADS Group deputy chief executive and managing director of aerospace Graham Chisnall says that this day is a key part of the industry’s drive to attract talent, saying “they’re all high-technology, they all involve the need for very high calibre people at all levels so ultimately we’re in competition with other industries for scarce skills”.

The 11-18-year-olds attending come from schools up and down the UK, and will take part in different activities depending on their age group. Chisnall says: “At the age of 11, 12, 13 it’s about grabbing their imaginations; the more mature individuals doing science A levels, this might help make their mind up for them [about university applications].”

The day is “backed up by a huge amount of commitment from companies”, Chisnall adds, as well as a number of other organisations including not-for-profit firms such as the Engineering Development Trust, while Aerospace Wales is putting on a bus of participants and transporting them to the Hampshire event.

Aviation manufacturer Airbus is among companies exhibiting who are using the event to individually showcase job and career opportunities, as recruiter.co.uk reported last week.
