Tue, 2 Jul 2013Gas and electricity supplier Scottish Power has set aside £90m for attraction, recruitment and training programmes as part of a multi-billion upgrade plan due to create 2,500 jobs.

It yesterday submitted plans to industry regulator Ofgem for a £5.2bn programme due to take place between 2015 and 2023, renewing and maintaining cables and substations servicing over 3.5m customers in Central Scotland, the North-West and North and Mid-Wales.

A spokesman for ScottishPower tells Recruiter that company is hopeful of having the plans approved on a fast-track basis by November.

Over 2,500 jobs would be created across the supply chain, including direct jobs, as part of the project, with a further 1,500 coming both in the company and its suppliers as part of another previously announced project investing in its transmission network.

Part of the £90m hiring and training budget would be used for engaging with schools and tertiary education on “various interesting ways of trying to attract people… [to] make our industry an appealing place to work”, the spokesman says.

The company will also invest in training programmes for its suppliers – currently it funds a 12-week course for people to become overhead line technicians with their contractors, and more such schemes would result.

The company has also “hosted a number of days at our training centres” for Armed Forces leavers looking to utilise their technical skills, the spokesperson says, making them one of several employers in this sector looking to such talent.
