Energy giant British Gas has announced it will expand its green workforce in 2009, with the creation of 1,400 jobs.

Stephen Nickson, managing director of energy sector recruiter DATS, told Recruiter: “We would love to work on the project. Anything of this magnitude will hopefully trickle down and encourage other project to come online.”

Business secretary Lord Mandelson highlighted the potential for growth in the sector at a recent jobs summit.

“The global market for low carbon and environmental goods and services is currently worth about £3 trillion, and it is projected to grow strongly over the next decade as both the developed and the emerging world makes the shift to low carbon or post-carbon.”

The focus of the new jobs at British Gas is for insulation contractors and engineers who work on eco-friendly boiler technology.
