Two large business expansions with substantial job creation implications have been launched by communications giant BT and budget airline Ryanair respectively. Additionally, energy firm EDF’s proposed building of a new nuclear power station would result in 25,000 construction jobs if the project moves forward.

BT
The company’s new sports TV offering BT Sport will create more than 400 new permanent jobs across the UK, and a further 400 short-term sales opportunities.

Permanent roles include over 300 sales roles at BT contact centres in Canterbury, Doncaster, Dundee, Glasgow, Truro, Newcastle and Warrington, and 75 customer service roles in Accrington in Lancashire.

The 400 six-month sales posts will be in place during the launch phase of BT Sport.

The BT Sport channels will be based at the iCITY development at the Queen Elizabeth Park in Stratford, London – better known as the site of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

EDF
EDF’s new nuclear power plant would create up to 25,000 jobs in construction, and 900 permanent roles during its lifetime.

Energy secretary Ed Davey yesterday told MPs that he was giving permission for the company to build a nuclear plant at Hinkley Point C in Somerset – the next stage is to reach an agreement on the price at which energy produced would be sold.

This agreement could take just a matter of weeks and construction may be able to begin early next year.

Ryanair
The announcement yesterday that Ryanair is to purchase 175 new Boeing 737-800 model airplanes goes hand in hand with a drive to create 3,000 new jobs for pilots, cabin crew and engineers.

By 2018, when the full order has been dispatched, the firm will have over 400 planes in total and says it plans to serve more than 100m passengers annually, up from a total of 79.3m in the year ending February 2013.

The $15.6bn (£10.3bn) plane deal sees approximately 75 planes bought as replacement for the existing fleet of 305 Boeing 737s.

Further jobs will be created on the ground at airports, with 950 jobs created on average by every 1m passengers transported, according to a 2004 report from the Airports Council International.

Previously, recruiter.co.uk has reported on another job creation plan from Ryanair, and the perhaps unexpected suggestion that the company’s approach to customer service is something recruiters would do well to aspire to.
