Over 2,160 jobs in manufacturing supply chains are to be created or safeguarded following the award of £30m of government money, with a further £50m being leveraged from private sector partners.

The investments will finance and strengthen 11 manufacturing supply chain projects across the automotive, aerospace and chemical sectors – two of which are in the North-East of England, with the remaining nine in or around Birmingham, as per the specific targeting of one portion of the funding.

The 2,160 figure is according to the bid documents submitted by the companies who were informed yesterday by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) that their pitches had been successful.

Business secretary Vince Cable says: “Over half the UK’s exports and almost three quarters of our business research & development activity is in manufacturing, so it’s vital that we create the right conditions to encourage growth in the industry.”
