Innovative sponsorship deals kept the UK’s flagship sporting event on the right track. Celia Poole reports
The statistics are staggering: 15,000 volunteers, 6,000 athletes, 5,000 members of the media, more than a million spectators, 72 countries, 17 sports, a £110 million stadium and 200 hours of live TV broadcasting. The sum of all these parts was Manchester 2002 - the XVII Commonwealth Games.
